Debengeni fresh air for hikers

Hikers and nature lovers, led by Sarel Nong and Sandi Moore, participated in a 15km hiking trail at Debengeni Waterfall last week.

In their effort to stay fit, more than 30 members participated in the challenging walk in wet and muddy weather.

Competitors are part of Hike Wise, an initiative by Nong to keep people fit during the Covid-19 pandemic and to encourage people to add hiking to their lifestyle.

According to Nong the weather was perfect for hiking.

“It seeks to usher in a new dawn while at the same time advocating for health, fitness and environmental impact and awareness across the province through adventure and outdoor activities.

“Part of what the hikers will focus on is the promotion of a healthy lifestyle. This will be done through hiking where we do not only hike on established trails, but navigate our own pathways through communities and villages as an advocacy programme for health and fitness,” Nong said.

He said the idea is to make hiking a lifestyle while affordable at the same time.

“We have all these scenic places where we can hike in the area. We will hike twice a month.

“So far, members are coming in large numbers, and it means that we are attracting more hikers to participate and all of them stick to Covid-19 regulations during the hike,” he said.

Mountain Company tour guide, Sandi Moore said when hikers complete the walk, they can say that the highlights of the day was to have spent time in nature and making new friends in fresh air.

“Seeing hikers smiling and interacting with fauna and flora, and learning about the area and being with others in nature, makes me happy,” Moore said.
