[WATCH] Polokwane court sets trial date for Deacon murders

The four murder accused face two counts of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and kidnapping.

The Polokwane Magistrate’s Court, on Friday, 12 March, set the trial date for the Deacon murders.

Observer journalist, Umpha Mananezhe reports outside the magistrate’s court…

The four murder accused, Sophie Mmako (51), Lazarus Mahlo (41), Advance Amid (30) and Casper Mudau (35), will appear for the murder of Lizette and Hettie Deacon. Each of the accused face two counts of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and kidnapping.

Amid and Mahlo abandoned their bail application early on in the case and in January, Judge Janine Ungerer refused the bail application of Sophie Mmako and Casper Mudau.

The four accused were arrested following a 72-hour activation plan after Lizette and Hettie’s bodies were found on the R37 on the evening of 10 September.

The deceased were attacked in their townhouse earlier the day and their bodies were found in the back of Lizette’s vehicle after police gave chase and the driver of the vehicle abandoned it next to the R37. The bodies also had several stab wounds.

The latest investigations show that both women died of strangulation.
