Four men suspected of illegal chrome mining were expected to appear in the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court earlier this week after they were arrested during a Police sting operation last Thursday.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe indicated that the suspects, aged between 28 and 58 years, were arrested on charges of mining for and possession of illegally mined minerals during a joint operation conducted in the area.
Police were on a disruptive operation at ga-Makgoba village adjacent to Twickenham Mine when the four suspects were spotted driving in two motor vehicles. They were stopped, searched and Police found several buckets full of chrome ore, according to Ngoepe.
The suspects were immediately arrested and the vehicles confiscated.
Provincial Police Commissioner Nneke Ledwaba complimented the team for dealing decisively with matters relating to illegal minig.
