Two suspects were expected to appear in the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday in connection with alleged illegal mining in Atok after they were arrested on Monday.
Provincial Police Communications Head Motlafela Mojapelo indicated that the two men, both aged 29 years, were arrested during an operation by the Provincial Organised Crime Unit in the Malipsdrift area on Monday.
The suspects were allegedly spotted transporting unprocessed chrome along the R37 road between Burgersfort and Lebowakgomo just after midnight. The truck were intercepted and the suspects found to have been in possession of chrome. The load and the truck were also confiscated, according to Mojapelo.
He added that both suspects have already been positively linked to illegal mining activity in the Atok area.
The destination of the chrome is still being investigated.
