Two suspected armed robbers are expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court today (Thursday) facing charges of armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition following their arrest in the border town on Monday.
Provincial Police Communications Head Motlafela Mojapelo indicated that the suspects, aged 26 and 30 years, on Monday allegedly entered a clothing store in Musina’s central business district pretending to purchase some items. Suddenly one of them apparently produced a firearm and demanded money from the cashiers. They allegedly robbed an undisclosed amount of cash and cell phones before fleeing the scene, according to Mojapelo.
He added that the Police were notified and a description of the vehicle were circulated. The white Toyota Corolla were spotted within minutes and a high speed pursuit ensued in the direction of Mmatswale Informal Settlement on the outskirts of Musina, according to Mojapelo.

The guns which were reportedly hidden in the air filter of the vehicle.

Along the road the driver of the Toyota allegedly lost control of the getaway car and collided with another vehicle. Two of the suspects were immediately cornered and arrested while the driver managed to evade arrest.
Mojapelo said that Police recovered two firearms hidden inside the air filter under the bonnet of the vehicle. Preliminary investigations revealed that the firearms had been stolen in the Carletonville and Funland policing areas in Gauteng earlier and were linked to two cases of house robbery that had been reported in both areas.
He added that the suspects are likely to be linked with other robbery cases around Musina.
A manhunt for the driver and third suspect has been launched and anyone with information is requested to contact investigating officer Simon Mukwevho on 082 759 4931 or report to the nearest Police station.
