CANSA Polokwane’s 2019 Relay for Life that was hosted at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday evening was well received by residents in support of cancer survivors. Together they celebrated life.
CANSA Polokwane community mobiliser Christopher Combrink emphasised that cancer survivors who are registered with the association were special guests during the event and he reiterated that they received free meal, gift bags and T-shirts. He indicated that the first walk of the evening was for remembrance and the crowd to salute survivors, while the second walk was titled the Luminaria ceremony to pay tribute to those who lost the battle against cancer. Combrink stated that the final walk was a fight back exercise.
On Saturday morning survivors embarked on the last lap to mark the end of the current 12-month lap, which also served as the first lap for 2020. He highlighted that during this lap they released doves into the sunrise as a symbol of hope.
“Survivors painted the types of cancers they wanted to beat on the wreck of a burnt-out bakkie. They later smashed the vehicle with a hammer to initiate a fight against the disease.
“We are happy with the turnout but we want to broaden CANSA Relay for Life’s footprint in the province to attract a larger number of people next year,” Combrink concluded.
