The start of the spring holidays was marred by carnage on Limpopo roads that claimed 17 lives across the province on the weekend.
On Monday Department of Transport and Community Safety Spokesperson Joel Seabi indicated that according to preliminary figures 19 accidents were reported and 17 people killed. This includes the 11 people victims of a horror accident at Chuenespoort on Sunday.
Seabi urged motorists to be considerate on the road and to practise patience at all times. He also expressed his condolences on behalf of Transport and Community Safety MEC Dickson Masemola towards families of the deceased.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe said the identity of the 11 deceased in the accident at Chuenespoort will only be made known once their next of kin have been informed. He remarked that most of the deceased were from the Chuenespoort area. A case of culpable homicide in being investigated.
It is alleged that a head-on collision between a bakkie and a passenger vehicle early Sunday morning resulted in the closure of the road for several hours. It is reported that one of the drivers allegedly lost control and swerved into oncoming traffic.
