Good Samaritans took time off their busy schedules last Wednesday to reach out to less privileged learners and abandoned children by delivering sanitary towels, nappies, baby formula, cereal, soap and towels to a number of local beneficiaries.
A group made up of Polokwane Police, representatives from Mighty Tactical Reaction Services (TRS), Polokwane Muslim Welfare Foundation (PMWF), Polokwane Victim Empowerment Centre attached to Polokwane Police Station and three learners from Curro Heuwelkruin extended a helping hand to learners at Flora Park Primary School, Kabelo Secondary School in Greenside and children at Ngwana Baby House.
Polokwane Police representative Valerie Maloba explained that poverty affects policing in many communities as persons living in poverty often engage in criminal activity to be able to fulfil their basic needs such as food and clothing. She indicated the purpose of the donation was to let impoverished persons know that there are people who are willing to assist because they care about them. She said although the delivered goods might not be enough, they try by all means to assist people where possible.
Mighty TRS owner and the coordinator of the initiative, Shabier Valjie highlighted that his company teams up with the Police on various occasions such as this one and for crime prevention. He added that the schools had approached the Police with a request for donations and TRS was called to come on board. Valjie further outlined that he was always willing to assist where need existed and went on to highlight that he recently helped a family in Westenburg rebuild their home that had burnt down.
“We try our best to help communities. We fight crime, donate to the needy and protect residents. I challenge other companies to join forces with us and plough back to communities and also help us fight criminality in the province. We have to build a safer society for all residents,” Valjie said.
The Curro Heuwelkruin learners Stephan du Preez, Werner Kotze and Keanu van Wyk said the donation was part of their Life Orientation syllabus that requires them to engage in community service. They too challenged learners from other schools to embark of such initiatives to help the needy.
