Grade 12 learners residing in Mitchell House’s boarding house were the guests of honour at a farewell dinner hosted by the Grade 11s in the school’s nutrition centre.
The function simultaneously marked the start of serious preparations for the matric exams with most of the Grade 12s leaving to study at home.
The event was attended by among others Headmaster Andrew Cook and his wife Heather, Bursar Godfried Krüger and his wife Denise and former Housemaster Doug Friedemann and his wife Jenean.
Current Housemaster Steven Ngwenya welcomed the guests and commended the Grade 11s on a well-planned event. He reflected on his second term as Housemaster and said to the Grade 12s that he has witnessed their truly radiant days filled with joy and laughter. “I have seen you play a lot, but most importantly I have seen you work hard and buckled down. These tributes have reflected the unique nature in which you have contributed to the life in the house. They also reflect the different perspectives of your lives, the achievements, the glory, the heart-breaking disappointments, the tragedies, the losses and the miracles,” he said.
Ngwenya alluded to the fact that living in a boarding house has numerous advantages. “Students have the advantage of being close to the academic and sporting facilities that are available on the premises and strong and powerful relationships are formed through boarding. Those are life-time memories which will stick with them for the rest of their lives,” he reckoned.
“I encourage you to carry the values that Mitchell House has taught you wherever you go. Become good ambassadors of you school, I will be following you close as you embark on your next phase of life. Remember we are still available for advice and support, so don’t hesitate to call us,” Ngwenya concluded.
