African National Congress (ANC) veteran Ike Maphoto will be buried at Polokwane Cemetry on Sunday.
Bra Ike’ Maphoto as he was affectionately known died at the age of 88 on 13 July.
Maphoto was among the first recruits of Umkhonto We Sizwe (MK) when it was first established in 1961 and this meant being separated from his family for more than 30 years during his years as an anti-apartheid activist.
He is a former member of the Limpopo Legislature, who also served South Africa’s democratic government in various capacities. He is a recipient of the Order of Luthuli, an honour awarded to South Africans who have made a meaningful contribution to the struggle for democracy, human rights, nation-building, justice and peace and conflict resolution
Donald Selamolela, ANC’s Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) spokesperson said the delegates expected at the funeral include President Cyril Ramaphosa and representatives from the South African Development Community, Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (Zanu–PF) and Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo).
“The funeral service will be held at Jack Botes Hall, in Polokwane on Sunday morning and he will be laid to rest at Polo­kwane Cemetery. He will be given a special official funeral category one funeral” Selamolela said.
