Following an earlier donation to the University of Limpopo (UL), the Rotary Club of Pietersburg 100 delivered a number of boxes of Lego blocks that was obtained from fhe Lego Foundation of Denmark to the Trix Nortman Workshop at the Association for Persons with Disability (APD) last Thursday.
Presiding at the hand-over Horst Meyer, President of the club said that APD was chosen to be one of the recipients of the Lego blocks because it can be used to help the residents and day visitors of the workshop to focus and improve hand-eye coordination and creativity. Meyer added that more of the blocks will be delivered to other institutions, including Polokwane Nasorgsentrum vir Volwasse Verstandelik Gestremdes.
APD Director Christa van der Walt thanked the Rotarians and assured them that the Lego blocks will be put to good use. “We will include it in our recreational and development activities,” she said.
A consignment of Lego blocks was also donated to the Science Education Centre of the UL recently. Martin Potgieter, a professor at the centre and also a member of the Rotary Club of Pietersburg 100 said that the toys will be used in the centre during educational workshops that will be administered by the UL and through outreach activities to disadvantaged primary schools. “The toys will help the learners to pay attention to detail, focus, hand-eye coordination, problem-solving and creativity skills. They will also expose their minds to the concepts of symmetry, balance of shapes and sizes whilst exploring and building the Lego sets,” Potgieter said.
