In an endeavour to encourage reading and expressing thoughts through poems, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has announced the 2019/20 literacy competition for prospective poets in the province.
The challenge is now open and entries may be submitted until 13 September with cash prizes to be won. Entries may be submitted in each of the province’s six official languages being English, Afrikaans, Sepedi, Isindebele, Tshivenda and Xitsonga. To enter, a maximum of 20 neatly typed poems must be submitted. According to the department, entries should represent all forms of of the genre, including sonnets, epic poems, limerick and narrative.
Winners in historically disadvantaged languages such as Isindebele, Sepedi, Tshivenda and Xitsonga will get an additional amount of R3 000. The poems will be judged anonymously by independent evaluators who are not attached to the department and each entry must be accompanied by an entry form or a copy thereof. The entry forms can be downloaded on www.sac.limpopo.gov.za or collected at the Olympic Towers Building on the corner of Rabe and Biccard streets.
Once submitted for the competition, entries may not be submitted for publication elsewhere. After the award ceremony, authors can have their manuscripts back for publishing but each written material published from the competition is requested to acknowledge that the publication was an initiative by the department.
