The Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) has set aside an amount of R62 million to build seven offices for traditional councils in the province.
Traditional leaders such as headmen, chiefs, paramount chiefs, kings and queens will soon have state-of-the-art offices.
Coghsta MEC, Basikopo Makamu was quoted to have said the offices would be built in the rural areas. “The offices will be handy to them because in the past they used trees, shacks and dilapidated halls as offices. On rainy days, councils had to postpone sittings. Six of these projects are at preconstruction stage and we intend to commence construction work soon.”
Malesela Dikgale, Chairperson of the Provincial House of Traditional Leaders said the offices, once completed will create a conducive working environment for traditional leaders in their respective areas. “The offices will be handy because most traditional councils are operating from dilapidated offices. The offices will also cater for the Department of Home Affairs and South Africa Social Security Agency services. They will also be provision for ward councillors. This will be a huge relief for community members because they will no longer have to travel to the city for such services,” Dikgale said.
