Only 34% of Lim residents will find jobs says StatsSA

Only 34 out of every 100 people living in the province and seeking employment will be recruited.

POLOKWANE – Only 34 out of every 100 people living in the province and seeking employment will be recruited.

Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) provincial office executive manager, Nthambeleni Mukwevho, spoke exclusively to Review last week following the release of StatsSA’s quarterly labour force survey covering the months from July to September.

Mukwevho said these figures meant that 66% of Limpopo residents would remain unemployed or struggle to get a job. This survey included people aged 15 to 64 years, according to World Labour Organisation standards.

The survey further revealed that 21 000 job losses were recorded in the formal sector during this quarter, while 16 000 were recorded in private households. While employment in the formal sector decreased, the informal sector and agricultural sector increased.

Mukwevho said 35 000 more people had joined the labour force in Limpopo compared to a year ago. “The trade sector is the largest contributor to the year-on-year increase in employment with 45 000 jobs,” he said.
