Two suspects are expected to appear in the Giyani Magistrate’s Court soon after they were arrested for allegedly preventing electoral officials from executing their duties and for destroying ballot papers during an incident at Guwela Village yesterday (Monday).
Provincial Police Communications Head, Motlafela Mojapelo indicated that the suspects are aged 30 and 35 years and face charges relating to the contravention of the Electoral Act as well as malicious damage to property.
Majapelo indicated that Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) officials were about to enter a homestead at Guwela Village to assist a citizen with a special vote when a group of men approached them, prevented them from executing their duties and damaged the ballot papers.
No one was injured during the process, according to Mojapelo. He indicated that the Police were notified and two suspects were arrested within hours of the incident.
The reason for the incident is unknown and still being investigated.
