Premier Stan Mathabatha is scheduled to lead the provincial commemoration of Human Rights Day expected to take place at Killarney Sport Grounds in Ga-Mokgehle village, Molemole Local Municipality today (Thursday).
It was reported that the celebrations are held on rotational basis in the five districts and this year’s gathering will be observed guided by the theme “The year of indigenous languages: Promoting and deepening a human rights culture”. It was learnt that 2019 marks the 59th anniversary since the Sharpeville massacre whereby 69 people died while 180 were wounded when apartheid Police opened fire on peaceful crowd that had gathered against the pass law. The day became an iconic date in South African that on the 21 March yearly is commemorated as Human Rights Day, it was reported.
The 2019 celebrations would draw attention to the critical importance of indigenous languages and the urgent need to preserve, revitalise and promote indigenous languages. The Human Rights Month is on the other hand acknowledged as a vehicle to foster social cohesion, nation building, national identity, socio-economic development and to combat racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and all related intolerances.
