Although mostly known for his hard tackling skills as midfielder for Polokwane City Football Club, Sammy Seabi on Sunday demonstrated his concern and care for the community in which he was raised by donating 122 pairs of brand new school shoes to impoverished learners at his alma mater, Thune Primary School in Ga-Mamabolo.
Seabi, who schooled at Thune from 2003 until 2007, said the decision to make the donation stemmed from his own experiences as a child. “I grew up in this area and there is a high rate of poverty. Also I know the pain of travelling to school barefoot. With this gesture I just wanted to show those needy learners that we care about them. We want them to enjoy their education without hindrances, like many other learner in the country,”Seabi said.
He added that he would be donating winter apparel to other schools in the area in June. “We are still evaluating the need and identifying the schools. There is a huge need and we have also called on community members to help us identify learners to whom we need to reach out.
