Disgruntled students of different campuses of the Capricorn College for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (Tvet), who gathered at the central office in Market Street earlier today (Thursday), had to run for their lives this afternoon as the Police started firing rubber bullets to disperse the large crowd.
The group in return responded by throwing stones as they ran for safety. At the time motorists in Market, Marshall and Suid streets found it difficult to navigate on these busy roads that were barricaded by rocks and trash. Road signs and street lights were further destroyed by the angry crowd on the bridge in Marshall Street before moving on to Suid Street where more infrastructure was targeted.
Polokwane Observer was on the scene where it was learnt that students from the Polokwane, Seshego and Ramokgopha campuses gathered to demand accommodation, groceries and transport allowances, text books and for the libraries at the various facilities to operate 24 hours.
Currently the group has dispersed but the Police and municipal community safety unit are still monitoring the area.
Provincial Police spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe said the Public Order Policing Unit was still dealing with the situation.
