In response to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s earlier call of working for the people, Polokwane Municipality hosted a Thuma Mina campaign in Mankweng on Friday.
Stakeholder Relations Officer of the municipality, Disree Manyane said in a media release that the municipality’s Political Management Team (PMT) joined the community of Mankweng where they painted and renewed the speed humps on the tar roads from the local cemetery.
Chief Whip of the Council, Mamedupi Teffo is quoted to have said that there is a need for government to respond to service delivery challenges in communities on a daily basis. “This campaign is part of extending helping hands to the needy and vulnerable people as leaders in government. Our President has set the platform for us to follow his footsteps and renew the hopes of our people through Ubuntu and working together to achieve more”, she said.
The Speaker of the Council, Mariri Ralefatane urged residents to care for their environment through cleaning it and not littering. He also appealed to communities to have a sense of ownership and belonging as part of creating a user-friendly area where people live in peace. “Today we are adhering to the President‘s call of improving the lives of our people. Mankweng communities need to take care of their recreational parks provided by the municipality,” he appealed.
According to Manyane, the municipality will be rolling out Thuma Mina campaigns across all clusters in celebration of the Nelson Mandela centenary. “Polokwane Councillors have cleaned up areas where there was illegal dumping, planted trees, painted roads, fixed potholes and enforced municipal by-laws through operations which addressed social problems and community safety,” she added.
At the event, acting Executive Mayor, William Kganyago said the campaign starts with every individual to serve and volunteer to work for their communities. He defined the campaign as the review of rebuilding a culture of becoming selfless and disciplined leaders in government. “We need to showcase Tata Mandela’s love which was reflected to the country and needy people through effective and quality service delivery rendered to our people as a municipality. In doing so, we will be restoring and renewing the confidence of our masses in improving their lives for better going forward,” he explained.
