Scammer exploits Mayor’s credentials

Polokwane Municipality’s law enforcement unit is investigating a scam that has surfaced in the city again and will report the matter to the Police in due course.
According to Communications and Marketing Manager of the municipality, Matshidiso Mothapo, a fraudster is using the credentials of Polokwane Executive Mayor, Thembi Nkadimeng to solicit donations for various ‘good causes’. “The impersonator sends SMSes from cell phone number 072 544 8230 to contractors and members of the public, pretending to be the Executive Mayor and requests donations,” Mothapo reported.
“It should be placed on record that this number or any other number that may be used does not belong to and are not linked to the Executive Mayor of Polokwane,” Mothapo stressed and explained that the Executive Mayor does not use SMSes to request donations from anyone.
Mothapo advised the public not to heed to the requests and to report matters of this nature to the police.”
