Members of the Rotary Club of Pietersburg 100 assembled at the Pietersburg Club last Friday evening to witness the induction of local businessman Johan Joubert as President of the club for 2018/19. His wife, Yvonne was also inducted as Rotary Anns President.
Community benefactors, Drienie and Charles van Wyk of Vision of Hope Foundation received Paul Harris Awards, the highest awards made by the Rotary Foundation. Paul Harris Sapphire Awards were also presented to Rotarians Pieter Vermeulen, Klaus Rabiega and Bruno Tschudin for their continuous service to the club and the community. Rabiega and Tschudin hold the distinction that they are founder members of the club that was established 32 years ago. Carin Meintjes received the Ann of the Year Award.
Delivering his inaugural address, Joubert alluded to Rotary motto being “Service above self” and said that he is ready for the task to lead the club and will strongly depend on the support of his board and every individual Rotarian, as well as the Rotary Anns. Joubert said that being a Rotarian means to make a commitment to oneself and the community, to make a difference and to be an inspiration for future changes and for fellow Rotarians. Joubert reckoned that more emphasis should be placed on the image of the organisation by making use of social media and involvement of younger persons. “Set goals, be passionate about it, work for it, be functional and effective and never say ‘no’, but always enjoy it,” he concluded. During a weekly club meeting the previous evening, local businesserson Martiens de Wet was inducted as member of the club.
Preceding club president Peter Mockford welcomed De Wet as a member and said that he was confident that the new member will have a fruitful engagement with other club members who are all committed to the vision of the organisation. The club currently has 34 members, of whom five new members were inducted over the last presidential year and two members relocated to the United Kingdom and Johannesburg, respectively.
