There were smiles of gratitude all round when representatives from Meropa Casino & Entertainment World donated female sanitary products to the value of R30 000 to learners at Luthuli Combined School, Seshego on Monday.
A press release issued by Meropa Casino & Entertainment Word quoted Mothomoni Mapela, socio economic development practitioner to have said that many learners from the community belong to households where pensions and other social grants are the only source of income. “To most girls in the area, sanitary pads are a luxury that they can’t afford which sometimes results to absenteeism during that time of the month. Worse still, some of the girls resort to using unsafe hygiene methods to manage their menstruation that can lead to health complications,” Mapela said.
He explained that the donation was made possible by the Sun City to Table Bay Charity Cycle Tour which saw a group of cyclists ride about 216 km a day to cover the full distance from Sun City to Cape Town in a week to raise funds for charity. Along the way, the riders stopped in several towns to make donations to local charitable organisations. In Polokwane they handed over of necessities to Ngwana Baby House, the Cansa TLC Ward and Luthuli Park Combined School.
