The needs of learners and failure to produce good Grade 12s results at his alma mater compelled Johannes Selepe, acting Publications Practitioner at the University of Limpopo (UL) to take action in order to improve the situation.
Selepe, in partnership with Bheki Ali Shongwe, a businessperson who operates in the province and Mpumalanga, handed over Grade 12 study guides and text books worth R6 000 to impoverished learners at Lefakgomo High School at Ga-Selepe village, Sekhukhune on Sunday.
He believes the gesture will enable the Grade 12 learners at the school to study and enjoy their Grade 12 subjects without hindrances.
Most of the learners are from impoverished backgrounds and some don’t have extra study materials such as study guides. The school has not done well in the past.
“Last year only three learners gained university entry so we believe that the donated books will become an extra motivation for the learners and help in the quest of improving the Grade 12 results at the school,” he said.
Selepe, who matriculated in 2004, annually organises career exhibitions for learners at his village. He says growing up he never had an opportunity to attend a career exhibition. “I do not want them to go through the same experience hence we try our best in bringing serves beneficial to them.”
Moses Malatjie, an educator, received the study guides on behalf of the school and the learners and reportedly said: “These materials will certainly help the learners to prepare for the upcoming final Grade 12 examinations.”
