Former Zambian football team striker, Wedson Nyirenda was appointed as the head coach of Baroka Football Club last Thursday.
Before joining Baroka, Nyirenda served as Zambian Football team coach from September 2016 until May this year.
He was involved in the management of the Zambian u.20 team that won both the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) u.20 Championship in South Africa and the African Youth Championship.
He presided over the tail end of Zambia’s senior national team 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign, where they finished second in a group containing traditional heavyweights Nigeria, Algeria and Cameroon.
He becomes the first African coach to lead Baroka since their promotion to the elite league in 2016.
Chief Executive Officer Morgan Mammilla said they could have chosen anyone for the post but they were captivated by Nyirenda’s profile. “He has won so many league titles in his coaching career and that is what prompted us to appoint him. We want to do well in the Premier Soccer League next season and we believe he can help us,” Mammilla said.
He also mentioned all the players will report for duty on 12 July following a two months off-season break. “The players are currently on holiday and we are expecting everyone to be back on the 12 July and on the day the new coach will have his first training session with the team,” concluded Mammilla.
