The University of Limpopo’s (UL) Student Environmental Association under the departments of Geography and Environmental Studies urged members of the community to take along their reusable shopping bags each time they go shopping.
The call was made by the students during the university’s Take-a-Bag-Shopping campaign launch at a local mall on Saturday.
Fourth year student in Environmental and Resource studies Sibongile Moloise said the campaign was one of the association’s green initiatives aimed at reducing single use of plastic. “We want people to stop using plastic bags and rather take their own shopping bags whenever they go to shopping. Plastic poses a massive threat to the biodiversity, agriculture and human health because it doesn’t biodegrade, it only breaks into smaller pieces called microbeads which are ingested by fish which we then later eat,” Moloise explained.
As part of the campaign the students sold non-branded, biodegradable, reusable shopping bags to shoppers with whom they also interacted and made aware of the dangers of plastic waste. Thrity-two bags were sold.
