Three high profile cases were concluded in separate courts in Limpopo last week when sentences were handed down to a vandal, two rapists and a father for killing his son.
National Prosecuting Authority Limpopo Communications Manager, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi referred to the case of Thabo Mohale who was sentenced by the Morebeng Regional Court to three years behind bars last Thursday after he was found guilty of destroying essential infrastructure. The incident occurred in December last year when he was found destroying an electricity transformer. Police arrested him and he pleaded guilty.
The Mankweng Regional Court sentenced Jimmy Phalantoa to life imprisonment and his co-accused Thabo Phalantoa to five years behind bars after being found guilty on charges of rape. Malabi-Dzhangi indicated that a 15-year-old girl was walking with her friend in 2009 when they were attacked by the two accused.
The friend ran home while Jimmy and Thabo forced the girl to a nearby shack where she was raped. Jimmy and Thabo were known to the girl and arrested soon after the incident. Thabo received a five year sentence because he was still a minor at the time of the incident.
Limpopo High Court sentenced Daniel Moruthiba to ten years imprisonment for the killing of his son. He assaulted his two sons and wife with a hammer. The Sekhukhune Regional Court found him guilty on two counts of attempted murder and sentenced him to six years imprisonment.
After he had been sentenced one of the boys died in his sleep as a result of the injuries and the Director of Pubic Prosecutions (DPP) took a decision to prosecute the accused for the resultant murder. Moruthiba pleaded guilty and was sentenced to ten years behind bars last Tuesday.
