The Tour de Plaas leg of the annual Spur School Mountain Bike League was hosted at Hoërskool Merensky on Saturday.
Riders from schools across the province entered for the race which is a big event on the racing calendar for learners. Learners will have participated in the three other legs, Tour de Pot, Tour de Lip and Tour de Lake before the end of September battling it out for a sport in the final to be hosted in October.
The league is about introducing more learners to biking and encouraging South African schools to adopt mountain biking as an official sport. With these simple aims the league has built a strong cross-country racing format with four events taking place in each province.
Schools are encouraged to enter as many riders as possible in order to rack up points which are awarded to riders’ finishing positions in each race. The primary and high schools finishing top of the points log at the end of each season are awarded the Region’s School Champion floating trophy.
Five learners from Hoër Tegniese Skool Tom Naudé participated and organiser Harry Strauss indicated that the team performed well. “It was a difficult route with various inclines and declines. Our riders show commitment and passion and will have to practice harder for a podium position,” Strauss said.
The complete results were not available at the time of going to print.
