Excitement runs high for one of the city’s premier sporting events that will bring thousands of participants and supporters to the old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday morning.
The Polokwane Annual Mayoral Cycle Race (PAMCR) will start at 07:00 and cyclists can compete over distances of 15-, 45- and
104 km. Prizes worth more than R300 000 can be won and the event promises to be a day filled with fun for both cyclists and supporters.
Polokwane Executive Mayor Thembi Nkadimeng is a keen supporter of sport and will also participate. Nkadimeng is confident that the event will be bigger than the previous year and said that indications are that more than 10 000 cyclists will flock to the city, bringing along a great number of visitors that will support the city’s hospitality fraternity and contribute to the local economy.
“We want to encourage members of our community to embrace an active, healthy lifestyle and general wellness and for the younger generation to turn professional. PAMCR has grown over the years to provide family friendly activities for people of all ages and abilities. It does not discriminate on anyone’s ability, but embraces people’s differences and preferences,” Nkadimeng reckons.
According to Nkadimeng, visitors can look forward to a fun filled atmosphere that will include an array of entertainment, children’s activities, music and dance, DJs and food stalls. A pump track will also be installed at the venue for young and old non-riders to play around and hone their cycling skills.
“This initiative is close to my heart for it speaks to the core of what ‘Building a Better City and Life’ entails. By positively encouraging residents to actively participate in sport and promoting fitness as a way of life, we hope to have a healthier population,” Nkadimeng says and adds that the event raises funds for the municipality’s charitable causes and gives participants the opportunity to change lives and give back to the community.
On line registrations for the event are still accepted and cyclists must have a valid Cycling South Africa (CSA) licence that is obtainable for R35 on registration, but is not required for the 15 fun ride. Walk-in entries can also be done at the Civic Centre during weekdays between 10:00 and 15:00.
