A suspected thief found himself at the wrong end of a community’s fury when he was brutally beaten by persons claiming to have caught him stealing an audio system from a stationary car at the corner of Jorissen and Schoeman streets earlier today (Monday).
The man, 30, who reportedly hails from Laastehoop village in Ga-Molepo was escorted to the Police Station in the nude.
A bystander said the suspect was allegedly seen in the act by students from a tertiary institution in the near vicinity of the scene. “The car belongs to one of the educators at the college. We know the car and the owner. So we were surprised to see someone strange in the car and alerted the owner,” He added that the owner then called people to chase the alleged perpetrator because he was already running away. “We managed to apprehend him and he was beaten by some members of the public and then we took him to the Police Station,” the bystander said.
Polokwane Police Spokesperson, Lesiba Ramoshaba said a case of theft out of a motor vehicle has been opened and the investigation continues. “We have managed to recover the audio system and we are still looking for a second suspect because we were told they were two. We urge the public to work with us but not assault anyone,” Ramoshaba said.
