Nape Nchabeleng has been appointed as the new Director-General (DG) of the province with effect from 1 February. The announcement was made during a press conference yesterday (Wednesday) morning following the Provincial Executive Council meeting on Monday.
Nchabeleng has been acting as DG since October 2015, when he took over the position from the then acting DG, Phuti Pheme. Prior to that, the position was filled by Rachel Molepo-Modipa, who was suspended in October 2013. Her dismissal was later declared unfair by the General Public Sector Service Sectoral Bargaining Council.
Provincial Government Spokesperson Phuti Seloba, when making the announcement of the appointment, said Nchabeleng went through a rigorous vetting process, interviews, and competency tests and came out tops amidst the candidates.
Nchabeleng hails from the province and has furthered his higher education at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), where he studied towards his Bachelor of Arts from 1993 to 1995, majoring in Political studies and International relations and did his Honours in Political Studies in 1996. He obtained an MSc in Development Planning in 1998.
He served as Senior General Manager and then as acting Head of Department in the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs up to June 2014 where he revived the housing procurement reforms after the housing grant was suspended due to allegations of corruption and concluded the organisational restructuring process and implemented change management in the department. He was the Senior General Manager in the Office of the Premier from June 2014.
Prior to that he served as General Manager, Development Planning in the Department of Local Government and Housing, Manager IDP and Strategic Planning at the Polokwane Municipality, Parliamentary Office Deputy Head of the Congress of South African Trade Unions and Development Planner in the Office of the Premier.
He has also occupied various leadership positions in the Mass Democratic Movement (MDM) since the mid-1980s to date.
