The fifth Big Walk hosted by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture on Sunday was well supported with more than 1 500 enthusiastic participants talking to the road for the event that aims to encourage a healthy lifestyle. The race over 15, 10 and 5 km started and ended at the Polokwane Rugby Field and saw new MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Onnica Moloi take on the 15 km accompanied

by staff and senior management.
An elated Moloi afterwards said although she had participated in various running events before it was her first Big Walk. ”It was a different experience altogether and I enjoyed every moment of it. I participated in the event because I wanted to encourage people to walk as it is an effective form of physical activity for improving the cardio-vascular system,” Moloi said.
Spokesperson for the department, Kola Maila thanked everyone who took part in the event. “We had a good turnout this year, better than previous years and this shows that the event is growing.
“We also had an aerobics marathon and entertainment for the children on the day and with that we wanted to promote family togetherness, healthy living and active lifestyles. We wanted to encourage people to take up the habit of walking, and to begin to engage in walking as a conscious choice in leisure-time activities,” Maila said.
