A group of local actors in-the-making under the direction of Limpopo-born writer Roelf Matlala entertained lovers of the theatre at a screen play called ‘Birthday’ at the Jeppe Education Centre in the city last Friday. The story depicts a flashback of events on one particular family revolving around the three birthdays of one of them. Chukudu Manaka is the only regular performer of the cast while the seven others were engaged by Matlala after auditions took place earlier this year.
Matlala currently resides in Johannesburg where he performs as a freelancer. “I am very grateful to the National Arts Council who co-funded the production that makes it possible to remunerate the players who are also freelancers,” Matlala said.
The performance were also staged last Thursday night for invited guests only and will be followed by performances in the Olive Tree Theatre in Johannesburg on 15 to 18 September.
