The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will host the South African Indigenous Games Festival from 19 to 25 September at Seshego Stadium, Spokesperson for the department, Kola Maila informed Polokwane Observer on Tuesday.
Kola said they were honoured to host the games for a second consecutive year. “It is a clear indication that we were great hosts last year and we are looking forward to showcase our rich cultural heritage and diversity to the whole nation,” Maila said.
He confirmed that teams from all provinces will participate and nine codes contested namely diketo, kgati, morabaraba, dibeke, ncuba, jukskei, kho-kho, intonga and drie stokkies.
“We are looking forward to great battles amongst the teams. We have already selected our team that will represent the province at the games. The team consists of 119 athletes that will represent us in ncuva (10), morabaraba (12), jukskei (7), itonga (12), khokho (28), kgati (10), drie stokkies (12), diketo (8) and 20 players for dibeke,” Maila said.
Last year the provincial team finished the games in sixth position and Maila is admant that the current team will finish in the top three. “We want to do better than last year. We have so much faith in the team we have assembled and we are confident that they will do well,” Maila said.
