Six students of the Karabi Skills Training Centre, situated at the Seshego Industrial Park, recently showed off useful gadgets that they invented as part of the centre’s training programme that focuses on preparing students for the world of business.
“We encourage our students to invent a useful tool or gadget that will make a difference in the market. We also supply them with business and communications training to prepare them for the challenges of the market. Karabi Training Centre does not churn out employees, we create entrepreneurs,” says Managing Director, Kgosi Mokgohloa.
Campus Manager, Boniface Garapo explains that they hosted the Innovation Day to show other institutions what Karabi can offer students. Representatives of the National Youth Development Agency, Industrial Development Corporation and directors of several tertiary institutions attended the event.
The students showed off their inventions which included a mobile refrigerator defroster, a cooler box that self regulates the internal temperature without the use of ice, a jacket designed to cool down workers in hot conditions such as mine workers, and a combined fridge, water cooler and air conditioning unit.
“Guests gave their expert advice and inputs regarding the products and how they should be upgraded to meet South African Bureau of Standards requirements. From here on the students will attend business and mentoring workshops as they fine tune their products. They will also receive advice from various industry experts to get them ready to hit the market running,” Mokgohloa explains.
“We challenge our students to tackle their own shortcomings, environments and backgrounds in order to change their lives and improve the South African economy,” Garapo elaborates.
Karabi Skills Training Centre is accredited by the Manufacturing, Engineering, and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (merSeta).
