Mitchell House’s Grade 4 to 7 learners proudly displayed the fruit of their labour recently, including some mind-blowing projects, when they participated in the school’s annual science fair. The 30 entries received ranged in theme from models demonstrating the basic principles of electricity to experiments on different beverages and how many bacteria can be found on the chewed top of a pen.
Kerry Spratt, science educator and organiser of the annual fair said the event provided an opportunity for learners to demonstrate their passion for science.
The competition is held in the first term of the year and emphasis is placed on developing scientific thought and skills as well as encouraging the use of the scientific method when conducting experiments.
The Junior Category received 13 entries and the Senior Category 17. Learners could enter as individuals, pairs or groups. Grades 4 and 5 presented demonstrations, models and research projects while grades 6 and 7 presented demonstrations or their own experiments, with the emphasis placed on the scientific method.
The judges made a point of talking to all the participants. While an attractive display and interesting project were part of the requirements a lot of the marks were allocated to having an understanding of their topic, evidence of research, as well as application of the scientific method.
