Police warned motorists on Monday to remain cautious when driving on the R555 between Stofberg, Roossenekal and Steelpoort after violent protest re-erupted in the area on Sunday resulting in the region of ten trucks and 4 buses being set alight.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto said no arrests had been made yet but several people were being detained for questioning. “According to information the community is unhappy with the leadership representing them in negotiations with the mines in the area. Public Order Policing (Pops) is still in the area to monitor the situation,” Otto said.
She said protest action commenced around 13:00 and got out of hand when several trucks and buses were set alight. Pops was deployed immediately to disperse protesters.
“During Sunday evening and Monday morning there were no further incidents of violence reported in the area. Motorists are still advised to be cautious as debris of the burnt out vehicles have not yet been completely removed. Police remain on the scene,” Otto said.
No injuries were reported and investigations continue.
