Savannah Mall was on lockdown at lunchtime yesterday (Wednesday) after a security guard was reportedly fatally shot in an earlier robbery at a jewellery business on the top level.
Shortly afterwards Savannah Mall management confirmed the shooting and said they had received information of six robbers fleeing in two vehicles, which led to the deployment of a Police chopper in an aerial search. According to preliminary information at Polokwane Observer’s disposal Police were searching for a white Toyota Hilux with registration number CDY856L.
An employee of a business on the lower level of the centre said they heard two gunshots and shortly after witnessed four men running towards a white BMW with GP registration pulling up in the parking lot. He said the one man was armed with a 9mm pistol while another carried a bag. Only afterwards did they hear of the alleged fatal shooting of the security guard.
From the scene Polokwane Observer’s journalists reported that mall management instructed shoppers and staff of the respective tenants to vacate, seemingly for the entire business day. At the time the area was being cordoned off.
At the time the owner of the apparently targeted shop was not available on her cell phone.
