Polokwane City Football Club players escaped injury on Saturday when their team team bus was involved in a minor accident on the corner of Thabo Mbeki and Voortreker streets.
The incident took place after their Premier Soccer league match against Bloemfontein Celtic at old Peter Mokaba Stadium. A witness at the scene said the bus was travelling down Voortrekker Street, when the driver of a Golf Velocity allegedly crossed the intersection and crashed into the bus.
“The driver of the car crashed into the Polokwane City bus. One of the passengers of the car was taken to hospital,” the witness claimed and said the driver of the Golf allegedly ran away from the scene once the players alighted the bus to inspect the damage.
Chief of Operations General of the Club, Tincy Tema confirmed the incident but could not comment further. Polokwane Police Spokesperson, Lesiba Ramoshaba said a case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened for further investigation.
This is not the first time the team has been involved in an accident. In 2012, when the team was still campaigning in the National First Division the team bus was involved in a crash that left four players dead and several seriously injured after their match against FC AK. One of those who injured, Kopano Sekgobela, is now wheelchair-bound.
Spokesperson for Mankweng Police, Matimba Maluleke said the case against Mahlodi James Machete who allegedly caused the fatal accident in is still pending.
