Undocumented foreign nationals arrested in Polokwane

The foreign nationals were travelling in a bus destined for Johannesburg and liquor valued at R175 800 was also confiscated.

POLOKWANE – The provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe, has lauded the members of the provincial police, for their hard work and determination to make Limpopo a safe and secure place.

Hadebe’s praise follows the arrest of 926 suspects between July 11 and July 19, according to a statement by police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo. 

“The persistent weekly operations conducted in all districts of the province continue to yield positive results. The suspects were arrested for various crimes which range from murder, rape, robberies, assaults, smuggling of illicit goods to the contravention of the Immigration Act and the Disaster Management Act,” Mojapelo explained.

He highlighted some of the arrests:

Nine undocumented foreign nationals, travelling in a bus were arrested by police members attached to the Polokwane International Airport along the R101, north of the central business district.

Packs of sorghum beer found in the trailer were also confiscated. The liquor was valued at R175 800, and the 31-year-old driver, who is also a foreign national, was also arrested.

“Preliminary police investigations revealed that the liquor as well as the undocumented foreign nationals, were being transported to Johannesburg,” he explained.

Syndicate dismantled in the Sekhukhune district

Mojapelo said four men, between the ages of 26 and 37, were arrested in the Sekhukhune district for being in possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles. They were arrested during a sting operation conducted by members of the crime intelligence, Limpopo Highway Patrol, Dennilton K9 and Groblersdal visible policing units as well as detectives.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were allegedly running a syndicate of fraudulently buying the vehicles from car dealerships and then selling them. Three salary advices reportedly utilised to fraudulently purchase the vehicles from various car dealerships were also confiscated,” he explained.

Traditional healer nabbed for rape in Seshego

The Seshego Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offenses and Crime Intelligence units nabbed a 42-year-old traditional healer for rape.

“The rape was allegedly committed in December 2020 in Seshego, after the father left his daughter with the suspect to perform rituals. He then raped her and fled the scene,” Mojapelo added.

Illicit cigarettes and motor vehicles confiscated in Tzaneen

“Four foreign nationals between the ages of 26 and 42 were arrested by members of the provincial tracking team on Sunday morning, July 18. Three bakkies and 72 boxes of illicit cigarettes valued at R252 000 were confiscated. The suspects were arrested during a well coordinated intelligence-driven operation that led the operatives to a premises in Tzaneen where they were arrested,” he said.

Contravention of the Disaster Management Act

A further 815 persons were arrested across the province for contravening regulations set under the Disaster Management Act.

Some of the suspects have already appeared in various magistrate’s courts around the province and the operations are continuing, Mojapelo concluded.
