Young Moletjie golfers on par on local greens

Golfers, between the age of 11 and 15, from Ga-Moeti Development Golf Club are on course to become masters of the game.

POLOKWANE – The aspiring golfers from the Moletjie area, were given an opportunity to play golf for the first time at the Polokwane Golf Club last Friday.

The gesture was part of the club’s initiative to grow and develop the sporting code in the rural areas.

According to golf instructor at the club, Mike Baylis, the golfers honed basic golf skills as well as received a comprehensive introduction to golf on the day.

“We had 12 young and passionate golfers who were happy to play and showcase their skills on the day. They received advanced coaching and an overall introduction to the golf course. We focused on their short game, as well as some basic golf rules and etiquette.”

Baylis stressed that the initiative is aimed at giving talented golfers from far flung areas an opportunity to show their most potential.

“We would like these players to become members of the club in the near future. We hope they compete in competitions and tournaments with the goal of one day producing provincial, national and even touring professionals from the initiative.”

Ketso Sebokedi, from the Ga-Moeti Driving Range Committee, said they are grateful to Polokwane Golf Club and Limpopo Golf Union for creating a platform for young golfers to play on and access the facility.

“The children were excited. They are keen to go back to the green and compete with other young golfers from other golf clubs.”

Sebokedi said they hope to produce a world class golfer from their club.

“It was a great experience for the young ones. They were also taught how to score and play on their own. I am confident that two years from now, our players will be able to play on their own and compete with others.”

One of the golfers, Rosene Boshomane (14) said she will forever cherish her first golf experience “We enjoyed playing, and it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, which will shape our golf careers. We are just grateful to all the stakeholders involved for fulfilling our dream,” Boshomane concluded.
