Limpopo: Education Department reaches 75% of targeted teacher vaccinations

A total of 46 259 teaching and support staff had been vaccinated across the province.

This is just 15 313 short of the set target of 61 572.

Education Spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene said the department was satisfied with the turnout and impressed at the speed at which Health was able to vaccinate staff especially in high volume areas, including the Capricorn District.

“We obviously still have people who have not been vaccinated owing to a number of reasons, such as those who had received the flu vaccine in the past 14 days, those who had Covid-19 and are not yet cleared for vaccination and those who are eligible for the vaccine but whose names did not appear on the system.”

She says the department experienced challenges on the weekend of 25 and 26 June with the Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS) not being able to pick up on staff members who are not using a South African identity number, resulting in foreign teachers who were mostly affected.

“This is a sector challenge and was escalated to our national technical team responsible for uploading Persal staff to the system to attend to, and the matter was resolved.”

According to Chuene, engagements with stakeholders are underway on how to cater for those who are eligible but unable to vaccinate and a decision on how the department will proceed will be communicated in due course.
