2021 class on right track

Principal of Northern Academy Secondary School, Frederick Romijn is adamant that the 2021 matric class is on the right track to achieve the envisaged 100% matric pass rate.

POLOKWANE – The 41-year-old teacher who took the position in January said they were happy to achieve a 97% matric pass rate of the 431 matriculants who wrote the exams in the first term.

“Their efforts are encouraging. All of them wrote their exams and did exceptionally well. We are proud of them and we are saying to them they must continue working hard and they will see the results. To achieve a 100% pass rate at the end of the year we need to double our efforts and work together as a team. We have compulsory extra lessons for all matrics who could not produce more than 50% in the first quarter. The sessions and lessons are on Wednesday afternoons and manned by teachers at the school.”

He also mentioned that he is proud of the strides made by athletes in various sporting codes. “Our netball, hockey, soccer and rugby teams did very well in the first term. We have already started with an enrollment programme for next year. We have specials for Gr 7 learners who will apply next year. Successful candidates will receive a free blazer,” Romijn concluded.

He says they will be opening a fitness centre in July that will enable all athletes at the school to sharpen their fitness ahead of the resumption of school sport activities.

Following the decision by the Council of Education Ministers to suspend all contact sports in schools with immediate effect, Romijn admits Covid-19 has been a challenge for athletes but safety and the welfare of the learners come first. “Covid-19 broke the momentum of sporting activities but we will continue with other activities at the school.”
