Local foundations lace up 100 pairs

At a previous visit to Makgefola Primary School in Matshelapata, Mentz, Aubrey Modiba and Phuthi Manyelo noticed the number of learners coming to school barefoot.

POLOKWANE – They vowed that they will return with shoes for the needy children, and last Thursday they did just that.

Over 100 pairs of school shoes were donated, which was made possible by the Aubrey Modiba Foundation, Grant Kekana Foundation and Phuthi Matt Foundation.

Manyelo said he was touched to see several learners come to school barefoot and some with worn-out shoes.

“I know what poverty is and that the only way to change this situation, is through education. Education will remain the backbone of every economy. Although we stay in an underdeveloped village, these are the kids who will bring change here. Let us invest in them as they are our future,” added Manyelo.

He said it was Modiba’s idea that both foundations need to donate.

“We managed to get a list of learners who do not have school shoes. It is a good feeling to see learners excited after they received the shoes, and we are very proud of all the sponsors who came on board to donate,” he said.

Makgefola’s Head of Department, Sarah Ramaphoko, said many learners are so embarrassed that sometimes they stay away from school because they do not have proper uniforms. “We are a school in need and we appeal to other good Samaritans and businesses to come on board and assist us in creating a better learning environment for our kids. This is a touching story and we as the school management are excited that our learners will now come to school with proper uniforms,” concluded Ramaphoko.
