Tickets are limited, so book yours NOW

LIMPOPO – The Charlotte Maxeke Music Festival, named after political activist Charlotte Maxeke is an annual opportunity for the community of Botlokwa to celebrate her life through music.

“This year we celebrate 150 years since the birth of Mama Maxeke and the government declared 2021 the Year of Charlotte Maxeke. The former resident of Botlokwa was a lover of music and academics and the festival is one way in which they are able to celebrate her legacy,” says Mathole Jimmy Machaka, Board Chairperson of Botlokwa Development Group NPO.

Machaka spoke to Polokwane Review about the need to continue striving for what Maxeke stood for, starting in her own community. “The festival is mostly a non-profit orientated event, which gives local artists a platform to perform, network and establish relations. Most artists who will perform on the day comes from Limpopo with the exception of two artists from other parts of the the country. Just under a third of the artists come from Botlokwa.”

He added that the festival creates temporary employment for residents and helps to boost the local economy, albeit for a weekend. “Various transport services, hospitality institutions, street vendors and other businesses will also benefit from the influx of people we are expecting to attend the event.”

Machaka said the money generated through the festival will be ploughed back into the community. “The NPO has plans to donate laptops, school uniforms and food parcels to the needy within the community,” he explained.

He added that these are a few of their short-term plans. “In the future we hope to assist local female DJ’s to reach the top of their field as well as champion an institution of higher learning in Mama Maxeke’s name.”

“Maxeke’s legacy will never be forgotten, we plan on ensuring that her name stays on the streets forever,” Machaka concluded.

The 3rd Annual Charlotte Maxeke music festival will be held on 1 May at the Sefene ground next to Vs Lodge from 14:00 -00:00.
