Former Limpopo police officials sent to jail for corruption

The men were convicted and sentenced following three years of investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.

MOKOPANE – The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation has welcomed the sentences handed down to former police officials, Richard Matsobane Molokome (54) and Karabo Archibald Sepato (40), found guilty of corruption.

The convicted men,  a warrant officer and constable who were attached to the Tuinplaas Police Station, were convicted by the Mokopane Regional Court in March following more than three years of investigation. The duo were sentenced to five year’s direct imprisonment with no option of a fine by the same court on Monday, 19 April, says Spokesperson for the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation, Capt Matimba Maluleke.

They were further declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Their sentencing follows an incident on 12 December 2017 when the duo demanded a bribe from a motorist in lieu of impounding his vehicle.

“On the day the men were conducting crime prevention duties through a stop and search when they stopped the complainant. Upon searching the vehicle, several defects were discovered and instead of issuing summons or impounding the vehicle, Molokome and Sepato demanded a R1 000-00 bribe,” Maluleke explained in an earlier statement.

The motorist paid the bribe for the release of his vehicle and then reported the matter to the Hawks.
