COLUMN: Defeat criminality and violence

Elvis Masoga

Violent criminals, ferocious robbers, sadistic murderers, predatory rapists and drug lords are turning our country into a gangland of terror. These soulless monsters are prowling and lurking dangerously at every corner of our streets and passages.

Our once-peaceful villages, townships and suburbs have fallen into the deadly claws of marauding thugs, rapists and drug dealers. Every day in our country, some women and girls are being violated; innocent citizens are robbed in daylight; school kids are being used by druglords to sell drugs at schools; brazen thugs are breaking into houses and business premises; and cash-in-transit heists are executed with blatant terror. So fearfully, we are living in a society that is besieged by wanton acts of devious criminality and brutality.

For too long, we have allowed criminals to run amok and inject fear in the hearts of citizens. A time has arrived for all patriotic citizens to draw a line in the sand and declare ‘enough is enough’.

Our nation must initiate a brave crusade against the vestiges of criminality and violence.

Without active community involvement, the police alone will never defeat the monster of criminality. If citizens can stop buying stolen goods, then criminals will have no reason to steal at all. Because thieves are usually committing theft in order to sell the stolen properties cheaply.

Honestly, the police are doing their humble best in their battle against crime and criminals. Every year, the police release the National Crime Statistics, elaborating on the varied trends and incidents of crime nationally.

In Limpopo, the police’s ‘Operation Swara Tsotsi’ has been instrumental in the fight against violent crime, drug abuse and property crimes. In a weekend operation last month, 1 797 suspects were arrested for various offenses across Limpopo.

Illegal firearms, counterfeit cigarettes, dangerous weapons, stolen vehicles, sags of dagga, cocaine and crystal meth were confiscated by the police during that weekend operation. A strong police-community partnership is critically important for creating a safe, secure and prosperous society.

All citizens must join hands with the police and wage a vigilant battle against violent thugs, robbers, rapists and drug dealers. One day we will surely win the war against criminality and violence. Criminals must begin to feel ‘the heat and waves’ of the rule of law.
