Two men assaulted, property and motor vehicle set alight in mob justice incident

Residents of Maphophe village marched to Mhinga village to locate two people, they believe were responsible for killing someone who died in a culpable homicide incident. 

LIMPOPO – Cases of public violence, attempted murder, malicious damage to property, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and arson have been opened by police following an incident of mob justice in Mhinga village on Tuesday.

Residents of Maphophe village, in the Vhembe district, marched to Mhinga village to locate two people they believe were responsible for killing someone who died in a culpable homicide incident.

Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe said police were notified but on their arrival, the mob had already caught the two men.

“The victims were assaulted and a motor vehicle, a house and a spaza shop were burned. The police managed to rescue the victims from the mob and they were taken to hospital with serious injuries,” Ngoepe added.

No arrests have been made thus far.

“A manhunt has since been launched and the team of detectives and police request anyone with information, which can lead to their arrests, to contact Capt Edward Maluleke at 084 318 7877 or the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111. Alternatively, they can contact their nearest police station or use the MySAPSApp,” he said.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba reiterated that lawlessness and disrespect for the rule of law cannot be condoned. He urged the public to refrain from unlawful acts, including taking the law into their own hands, and to report all suspected criminal activities to the police.

“Those who are still perpetrating these types of incidents will be dealt with harshly and without compromise,” he concluded.

The situation is currently being monitored by the Public Order Police Unit.
