Themane family says trial will finally bring them closure

Thorisho Themane's brother, Karabo, says being in the court room during the murder trial has allowed him an opportunity to put himself in the shoes of his late brother.

POLOKWANE – Karabo spoke to BONUS after court adjourned for the second day of Thorisho’s murder trial in the Polokwane High Court, on Tuesday.

The trial, which was postponed multiple times due to Covid-19 related reasons, began almost two years after Thorisho was murdered and Karabo says the family are finally able to get closure and understand what transpired on the night of 23 February 2019.

“Being able to imagine myself going through what they put him through gives me an understanding of the emotional torture my brother endured. My brother was fearing for his life, he tried to run away and tried to get help but he didn’t get any.”

At the time of the murder, 11 people were arrested – nine minors and two adults. Three of the minors have since turned state witnesses and will be tried as adults as they are now of age.

Karabo says being able to hear the cross examination of the witnesses allows the family to clear up questions they had about his murder.

“It is a bit disturbing to hear some of the details, and how people are implicating my brother when we all know what kind of person he was. I guess in a way, all of the accused are just trying to disentangle themselves from what happened,” he said.

Karabo added that although the loss of his brother will always stay with him, life goes on and he believes that justice will be served.

The trial was set in Polokwane High Court this week.
