Operation of Seshego taxis suspended until further notice

Three men were arrested in connection with taxi violence between members of the Seshego and Moletjie taxi associations, earlier this week.

POLOKWANE – Taxi users in the Seshego area are urged to find alternative modes of transport as the operation of taxis in the area have been suspended until further notice.

This was confirmed by the Spokesperson of the Seshego Taxi Association, Moshita Lekganyane.

Earlier, three men, between the ages of 31 and 38-year-old, who are believed to members of rival taxi associations, were apprehended in Seshego for reckless and/or negligent driving, as well as the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Their arrests follow incidents of taxi violence between members of the Seshego and Moletjie taxi associations, earlier this week.

“The suspects were driving two mini-busses without registration numbers and were escorted by a white Toyota Cressida that was driving into oncoming traffic, heading towards the Seshego Circle Centre. A group of taxi drivers then threw stones at the vehicle and one passenger pointed a firearm at them,” a statement by Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, read.

He said the police intervened and discovered one firearm with rounds of live ammunition.
“The driver and passenger were apprehended for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” he explained.

Ngoepe said another man, aged 29, was arrested at the Seshego Police Station. “The man is believed to be a family member of one of the arrested suspects. He was arrested after interfering with police while executing their duties,” he added.

The Transport Department’s Media Liaison Officer, Mike Maringa, said a meeting between the associations, which was scheduled for Friday afternoon, did not materialise. “Some members of the associations were not available and we are looking at a possibility of having the meeting this coming week,” he added.

Lekganyane concluded by saying that none of their members had been arrested.
