Limpopo Premier reiterates call of Health MEC call for residents to abide by Covid-19 regulations

Premier Chupu Stanley Mathabatha says the province is on high alert and warns that the ever increasing rate of local Covid-19 infections threatens to overwhelm public health systems in the province.

LIMPOPO – This warning comes after the province recorded an increased number of infections in the Makhado, Thulamela, Polokwane and Thabazimbi areas.

In a statement, Premier Chupu Stanley Mathabatha said that the province is on ‘high alert’ and warned residents about the resurgence of Novel Coronavirus in Limpopo.

He added that the major contributing factors of the second wave in the province is the behavior displayed by majority of young people.

“Videos have so far emerged on social media platforms where people are attending super spreader events, such as soccer tournaments, street bashes, after tears gatherings, weddings, church services, drinking sprees at taverns and shebeens, and completely ignoring health protocols.”

Mathabatha warned residents that if this current trend continues it may lead to public health facilities in the province being overwhelmed.

“We are reiterating our clarion call to society in general to treat this year’s festive season as business unusual. Parents are requested to take responsibility for the action of the youth. Movements should be limited as much as possible. Events should be attended by close family, few friends and a limited number of relatives. People are urged to wear masks, exercise social distancing, practice health hygiene at all times.”

This Covid-19 variant is even harder to contain. We are under siege because of this pandemic and we should all practice the new normale, Mathabatha concluded.
